Darkest Dungeon is an indie RPG developed by Red Hook Studios, a game development studio based in Vancouver, Canada and founded in 2013 by Tyler Sigman and Chris Bourassa.
This game features a combat system along the lines of a Roguelike system; the characters, as well as enemies, have a speed attribute, but the turn order is also influenced by a random number, from 1 to 8, that is assigned to every character and added to their speed stat. Also, permadeath exists here, but the game forces the player to continue. Lastly, since this is a side-scroller game, there is no tile-based movement.
Long before the events of this game, the remainder of an ancient noble family led a massive excavation in search of obscure powers. Inadvertently, this excavation freed many evil beings that had been living in the depths of the Earth, who have escaped to the surface to bring suffering to its inhabitants. The player leads a group of heroes in their quests for treasure while cleansing the land of evil forces that menace with destroying it.
Darkest Dungeon was released for the Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and SteamOS operating systems; it was available on Steam on January 19th, 2016 for the former two, although it was also released on the Mac App Store in the last week of April 2016. Linux received support on April 26th, 2016. PlayStation®Vita and PlayStation®4 ports were released on September 27th, on the same year.
The game is currently available in eight languages: English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Czech, and Polish.
Darkest Dungeon focuses on the humanity and psychological vulnerability of the heroes and asks: What emotional toll does a life of adventure take?
